The Warriors of Korcula – the Moreška

The Moreška is a combination of a play and a set of sword dances, originating from the 13th century in Korcula.  It commemorates the battle of the Croatian warriors against the moors.  Over the years, the Moreška was performed all over the Mediterranean, however it is now only performed in Korcula alone.

The Moreška is a love story… the fiance of the Red King, is taken captive by the Black King.  The two kings agree to fight for the princess.  Seven sword dances are performed to show the battle between kings.  In the end the Red King wins the battle and the hand of the princess… I do love happy endings!
